Quid Pro Throw
February 16th, 2009Most of us are familiar with the latin saying “quid pro quo” which as found on Wikipedia means,
Quid pro quo (From the Latin meaning “something for something” [1]) indicates a more-or-less equal exchange or substitution of goods or services.
English speakers often use the term to mean “a favour for a favour” and the phrases with almost identical meaning include: “what for what,” “give and take,” “tit for tat,” “this for that,” “you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours”, and “swings and roundabouts.”
So what in hades bells is Quid Pro Throw you ask? It’s when you have a giver and a taker. You make a deposit, get no return. You provide something and get back nothing. In other terms, you do the quid but somehow, somewhere, your pro don’t quo; it THROW. (As is Thown away favours, whats, tits, this’s, scratchs, and swings.
It is the most frustrating of all things when you think you have a bonafide partner, friend, or associate who jumps in the boat with you when you set sail, with the intention (at least on your part), to reach a destination together. But after the initial launch and celebration, the hard part kicks in. When the winds subside or the storms blow in, you have to row baby row. Usually in the beginning we are too busy rowing to notice that our shipmate(s) have yet to pick up their oar(s). But then you realize that all your pulling is in vein because your ship is inexplicably rowing in a circle, not going anywhere but round and round the same waters. That’s when you look around to see, you’re the only one rowing! Not only that, you see the others putting on life jackets and lowering the motor powered life boats about to abandon ship. Holy Sh… you might exclaim, as you try to remind them that you all started out together to get the island of plenty, and you stand amazed that all of sudden those who you have put some much effort into are so quick to leave you floating on your own.
I don’t know if you’ve ever been here? I have. Some of my dearest loved ones have. The challenges are always greatest and climb steepest near the top. Do you have what it takes to reach the summit of your game, your life, your goals? Challenge yourself, challenge your partners… If you make a pack to battle together and journey together in the harmony of “quid pro quo”, don’t be so quick to “Quid Pro Throw” your partner to the sharks or under the bus. Next time it might be you, left with the only oar up a large tributary without locomotion.
Peace
